About 25 would be drivers have now acquired an important life skill, that being how to drive on snow and/or ice.

I was fortunate to have so many visual examples of what not to do in hazardous conditions from the general public of Grantham who seem hell-bent on driving in the same way they always do i.e. badly. The most common error seen on the roads is an apparent inability to control their speeds by delicate use of clutch control and sequential gear changes down to and including 1st gear to stop their vehicles. Instead most do what they normally do which is to brake late and firmly causing the wheels to lock and the car to slide out of control towards a T Junction!

I have to admit that the vast majority of drivers on our roads have never been trained to drive in our present arctic conditions and therefore a certain amount of ignorance is to be expected but if you are concerned about driving on snow why don’t they seek guidance on how it should be done.

Today I took out a learner for his first ever driving lesson and after minimal demonstration on the correct techniques he coped extremely well in what was in my opinion the worst driving conditions we have experienced all week.

The Weather people appear to want to keep telling us we are stuck with this weather for at least the next 10 days so the accident and injury rate is only likely to increase. I just hope I am not unfortunate to be passing a T Junction when one of these unlucky drivers sails out into the middle of the road as happened only a few days ago narrowly missing my car.

The DSA have closed their Test Centres across the UK for the longest period probably for many years and no prospect of any tests going out as yet. It is time we practiced our rain dance and got rid of the white stuff as I think everyone has had enough now including me!
